The construction and opening, in 1935, of the Prep/Junior school footbridge.
Saturday February 9th 1935
The bridge was ‘given’ by OW Hubert Batchelar (SH 1911-1916) in memory of his wife Doreen Batchelar (who, along with her husband, conceived the idea of the bridge, but sadly died during its construction) and of her father OW Clifford Bowen (SH 1887-1892).
Clifford Bowen was Captain of both Wycliffe Cricket 1st XI and Rugby 1st XV teams and went on to play for Wales in international rugby. He died in 1929.
From The Wycliffe Star No. 156 (April 1935):
“The opening of the bridge would remove a great load of anxiety from those who had shepherded the boys of Ryeford each day across the road to the playing fields opposite, and they hoped that it would stand for long years for the service of the whole community”.
