Nick and I started our Wycliffe journey on the same day in September 1956. We became firm friends and our friendship lasted a lifetime. I was very pleased to be his Best Man at his wedding and to be Godfather to his son.
Nick’s career initially focussed on hotel management. He attended the Courtfield Hotel Management and Catering College in Blackpool and received the Student of the Year Award in his final year. After various management positions in the hotel industry, he joined the Playboy Organisation as Managing Director of its international operation which involved promoting and marketing the Playboy name and logo worldwide. After a few years, he decided to go back into the hotel business and he bought a country house hotel in Cumbria. This proved to be a successful period in his life but he wished to enter the property development sector and decided to convert his hotel into apartments which was his first venture. Other property developments followed.
His time at Wycliffe was more academic than sporting although he participated in a number of extracurricular activities. However, he once asked me to partner him in the men’s doubles but if my memory serves me correctly, we were knocked out in the first round!
Nick had two children – a son, Timothy and a daughter, Joanna. Sadly, however, Joanna died in 2019 after a brave fight against cancer. He was, of course, devastated.
Nick was a man of principle, good humour and a good and supportive friend. He was also a very good host! I will miss him and his friendship which I valued for almost 70 years.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, his son, Timothy and four grandchildren.
